Vision
My many years of therapeutic experience have shown me how important it is for mental health care to be based on collaboration and consistency.
That is why I founded the Arkesis Mental Health Center in Nea Ionia—as a space where responsibility and thought are shared.
From the very beginning, my goal was to build a team with a shared philosophy, where psychotherapy and psychiatric support coexist responsibly. At Arkesis, we work closely together, discuss each case individually, and collaboratively develop the appropriate therapeutic framework.
My goal is to provide mental health services with consistency and continuity. I want everyone who comes to us to be able to speak without fear or stigma, finding a stable point of reference to gradually gain greater inner security and self-efficacy.
Melina Tzakou
Founder of the Arkesis Mental Health Center
One of the most promising signs of our times in our country is that people are beginning to view psychotherapy not as a “last resort,” but as a process of self-awareness and personal growth.
Melina Tzakou
Melina Tzakou is a psychologist and psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapist in Nea Ionia, with many years of experience in individual psychotherapy for adults, children, and adolescents, in couples therapy, as well as in parent counseling.
She is the founder and scientific director of the Arkesis Mental Health Center, where she has overall responsibility for its scientific direction, philosophy, and operations.
Her clinical experience is characterized by a deep commitment to the therapeutic relationship, respect for the uniqueness of each individual, and a belief in therapy as a meaningful—yet demanding—process of change.
Education & Training
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and has completed the Master of Arts in Applied Developmental Psychology.
She has been trained in Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at DIKEPSY (Interdisciplinary and Research Psychosocial Support Center for Children and Adults), where she has also served for the past two years as a member of the teaching team for the four-year training program in psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Her therapeutic practice is grounded in a framework of supervision and ongoing professional development, including regular participation in continuing education seminars, professional groups, and training programs.
Clinical Experience
Ms. Tzakou’s clinical experience includes many years of private practice in Greece, as well as collaborations and the provision of mental health services abroad.
Through her work in countries such as the United Kingdom, as well as through the professional relationships she continues to maintain internationally, she has been exposed to different institutional frameworks for mental health care and different cultural approaches to therapy.
This experience has significantly shaped her therapeutic perspective, deepening her understanding of mental health not only as an individual issue but also as a matter of social context, access, and attitudes toward human vulnerability.
In her clinical practice, she has worked with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, existential and relational issues, as well as with children and adolescents facing emotional or developmental challenges. At the same time, she provides therapeutic and counseling support to parents, helping them understand their children’s needs and family dynamics.
You don’t have to reach a breaking point or have a “serious diagnosis” to start psychotherapy.
Her Approach to Psychotherapy
Her approach is psychoanalytic/psychodynamic and focuses on the therapeutic relationship as the cornerstone of the therapeutic process.
For Melina Tzakou, psychotherapy is a space where a person can pause, speak, and work through the issues that trouble them over time—not a process of quick answers or ready-made solutions. To this end, particular emphasis is placed on understanding internal conflicts, recurring patterns, and the way in which external demands have often been internalized, creating tension between what a person feels and what they “should” be.
The therapeutic relationship is the fundamental tool of psychotherapy. Within this relationship, old patterns are worked through and new experiences are created that lead to change.
Public Discourse and Presence
In addition to her clinical practice, Melina Tzakou actively participates in the public discourse on mental health.
She is frequently invited to speak and write about issues related to contemporary mental health, such as anxiety, burnout, the generation gap, the therapeutic relationship, and destigmatizing mental health challenges.
Through her appearances in the media and thematic features, she seeks to contribute to the development of a more mature and substantive discourse on psychotherapy, free from oversimplifications and stereotypes.
