Couples therapy helps couples strengthen their communication and resolve the issues they are facing. Through open dialogue and guidance, they find ways to understand each other better and strengthen their relationship.

Couples Therapy

Through couples therapy, couples have the opportunity to work together in an environment of mutual understanding and trust, with the goal of expressing their needs and concerns, understanding the dynamics that affect their relationship, and finding ways to strengthen their connection and communication.

“A good relationship isn’t the result of perfect people, but of acceptance and the work we do together.”
— Harville Hendrix

At ARKESIS, we approach each couple with respect for the uniqueness of their relationship. Through a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic and systemic approach, we help partners understand how their personal experiences, family influences, and past difficulties can affect their current relationship dynamics. We focus on improving communication, managing conflicts, and restoring or strengthening trust and emotional connection.

The therapeutic process begins with an initial session, during which we explore the couple’s needs and goals. Sessions are flexible and tailored to each couple’s specific needs. Some of the issues we address, depending on the situation, include frequent conflicts, alienation, infidelity, life changes, or differing values and priorities.

Through this process, couples gain the tools to develop greater understanding and mutual respect, laying the foundation for a healthier, more balanced, and more meaningful relationship.

FAQs

Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps two people better understand their relationship, improve their communication, and work through difficulties or conflicts that affect their connection with one another. Within a safe and neutral therapeutic setting, the couple gains space for meaningful dialogue, understanding, and the exploration of new ways of coexisting.

At the Arkesis Mental Health Center, couples therapy focuses on the dynamics of the relationship and the ways in which experiences, emotions, and communication patterns influence the couple’s daily life.

Couples therapy can help when partners have difficulty communicating, experience frequent conflicts, or feel emotionally distant in their relationship. There doesn’t have to be a serious crisis for a couple to start therapy—it often serves as a preventive measure and helps strengthen the relationship.

Couples therapy can be helpful in situations such as:

  • frequent arguments and tension
  • difficulty communicating
  • emotional distancing
  • lack of trust
  • relationship crises
  • difficulties after the birth of a child
  • parenting issues
  • infidelity
  • differing needs or expectations
  • Difficulty making joint decisions
  • Life transitions and changes

Couples therapy helps partners gain a deeper understanding of each other’s needs, emotions, and communication styles. Through the therapeutic process, the couple can identify recurring patterns of conflict and develop more effective ways of connecting and cooperating.

Therapy aims not only to reduce conflict but also to strengthen emotional closeness, mutual understanding, and the quality of the relationship.

The sessions take place with both partners present, in an atmosphere of confidentiality and respect. The therapist acts in a supportive role and facilitates dialogue, helping the couple express their difficulties, feelings, and needs in a safer and more meaningful way.

The therapeutic process usually begins with an initial meeting to explore the couple’s challenges and goals for therapy. The duration and frequency of sessions are tailored to the needs of each couple.

Couples therapy can help couples better understand their relationship and explore the difficulties they face before making final decisions. In some cases, it helps restore communication and connection, while in others, it helps the couple navigate a potential separation with greater emotional maturity and respect.

The goal of therapy is not to “force” the couple to stay together or break up, but to create a space for understanding and meaningful processing of the relationship.

Couples therapy is ideally conducted with the participation of both partners, as the therapeutic work is based on the dynamics and interaction within the relationship. However, even when one partner has difficulty participating, an initial meeting can help in understanding the situation and exploring options for support.

You can contact the Arkesis Mental Health Center to schedule an initial meeting to get to know each other and explore the needs of your relationship. This initial contact helps the couple discuss the difficulties they are facing and explore how therapy can support their relationship.
